Allow me to tell you about my very first experience with Reiki and my first Reiki training… which I refer to affectionately as Reiki Lite (or Reiki Light for the more traditional)…
In 1990 (give or take a year) I was living in Los Angeles and I had a girlfriend who was very involved with Reiki in its early days. She talked about it quite often, but I generally tuned out whenever she started talking about Reiki (or most of the other esoteric stuff she was into for that fact). ๐ณ She would ramble on and on about it and I would nod my head and feign interest, although my mind was generally on the next day’s meetings. I was very involved in business at the time ad we were in the middle of trying t take our company public… so I could have really cared less about spiritual pursuits… my only God at the time was the almighty dollar.
She gave me my Reiki attunements and I’ll admit that I didn’t feel anything at all and really the only thing I remembered from her “teaching” was that she told me if something hurt (on me or someone else) to just hold my hands there and the pain would go away. For ages I had her symbols written down, but I don’t thing they made it to Japan with me as there was lot that was left behind.
It wasn’t long after that that we both acknowledged the fact that we were running on very different tracks and that the only thing we really had going for us (which I won’t go into now as this is G Rated site) wasn’t really enough for a sustainable relationship and we drifted apart never to reconnect again.
It also wasn’t long after that that I started noticing a burning sensation in my hands whenever I was around any type of energy imbalance (although I didn’t realize that is what was occurring at the time) and my hands were called upon to do many a healing (it really did work wonders on hangovers). I attributed it to the Reiki non-verbally as I really didn’t know what was happening, but it was doing exactly what she said it would do.
It wasn’t until until a few years after I came to Japan that things spiritual became of interest (that’s a story for another day). The term Reiki was popping up more and more and I finally decided to learn (and pay attention this time) more about it. Every once in a while pieces of what my Reiki Lite teacher told me will pop into my head, but for the most part Reiki Lite will have to remain Reiki Lite. And that’s how I was exposed to Reiki!! ๐
