I have been asked many times about the relationship between Reiki and Kids and as in many of the cases previously discussed I believe this to be another match made in heaven. One of the obstacles to performing Reiki that many practitioners encounter is that they think too much. Kids do not have this same tendency. For many of my students I recommend switching on the Reiki energy and going to sleep… just let it flow… do not try to manipulate, force, cajole, or otherwise influence it in any way The Reiki energy will automatically be attracted to the area of greatest need and so the effort really is not necessary.
Kids have a greater desire to do what they’re told… ok, maybe not in regard to cleaning their rooms or eating their spinach, but I’ve found that the children I’ve directed to give Reiki do so with much purer intentions and much more heart… and those are the things that can increase its effectiveness. In studies of advanced energetics Reiki energies can be augmented, but 9 times out of 10 this is not necessary… just get the Reiki flowing and get out of the way!
I have also been asked what the ideal age is for teaching Reiki to children and there really is no absolute answer to this question. Some kids have more ability to do Reiki than some adults I’ve met. I really don’t see any problem with teaching the first level of Reiki to kids under 10 as long as they are able to understand it. I attuned my own daughter when she was 5 and she just takes it as a matter of course nowadays. “Gimme Reiki” or “Do you need some Reiki” are common utterances around the house and my 4 year old son has witnessed this and the curiosity is subsequently growing. When he’s 5 he will also be more than ready for the gift that keeps on giving and I’m sure that as a result they will both have the ability to take their Reiki to much greater levels and develop a much greater understanding than I ever was.

I have 4 kids, ages 2, 4, 6, and 9. I was attuned to Reiki while pregnant with my 2 year old, and I attuned my husband about six months ago. My 4 year old is level 2 Usui at his request, and I attuned my 9 year old to the highest level of Kundalini Reiki. We’re a Reiki family. Even my 2 year old gives Reiki to trees and walks up to people offering Reiki. It’s a way of life in our house. It’s beautiful to watch the kids give each other Reiki when they’re hurt or have a headache, and they do self-Reiki when going to sleep. It’s great for kids to know they have a way of coping with intense emotions or bumps and bruises. It’s something that can help them throughout life.
