I was greatly saddened today to learn of the passing of my favorite contemporary novelist, Michael Crichton, a man who’s inspiration, imagination and intelligence, to my reckoning, knew no bounds. Michael, if I may call him Michael, played a strong role in my being here today on several levels, and I’d like to take this opportunity to both thank him as well as acknowledge his contributions to my life.

First off, while many scientists found fault with his novels and attacked his scientific theories, what he proffered was, in all actuality, just stories. He was not writing for scientific journals or medical textbooks. The old adage that “the science fiction of today is the science of tomorrow” may someday escalate his scientific theories to actual science, but in the meantime they remain a source of entertainment… nothing more, nothing less. And it was great entertainment at that. Given his Harvard Medical School background, he was able to present his characterizations with an air of authority and just the right level of technical“evidence” to make them “real” in the minds of the reader. His escalation approach to disasters hooked his readers each and every time to create the page turners he was highly acclaimed for.

My interest in Michael’s work began in 1990 with the release of Jurassic Park… after that I was hooked. I went back and read all of his previous offerings and became a devoted fan for life. I have enjoyed each and every one of his novels and spent almost as much time anticipating new releases as I did enjoying the existing ones. Alas, once his last novel is released next year, the anticipation of what he has in store for us will be no more and I”ll have to content myself with re-readings and re-interpretations on the big screen.

Throughout my life I had always looked at things of a metaphysical nature with a great degree of skepticism. That is, until I read his book Travels, which, through his meticulous straight to the heart style discussions of his own experiences with auras, entities and psychic activity removed a great deal of that doubt, and I began to see such things through new filters based on my own interpretations of his imaginative, yet technically astute perceptions. It was right around this time that I had my first Reiki attunement, which, just a year earlier would have been dismissed outright.

For as long as I could remember I had always wanted to be a writer, although I never really felt like I had anything of any importance to write about, so I never actually took the time to sit down and put pen to paper. Michael’s descriptions and depictions of events leading to his becoming a writer cemented that desire all the more, and was extremely inspirational, and I always knew that someday the muse would strike and I would actually find the time and motivation to write. This blog is actually my realization of that desire. And while I wouldn’t categorize it as anything monumental, it is a start, attributable to Michael’s inspiration and influence (as well as that of Stephen King, another writer I hold in quite high esteem). I must admit that while I have a long way to go, I quite like the feeling and I am beginning to understand the intricacies involved.

So there you have it, indirectly leading to my study of Reiki and my writing about it here in this blog (and elsewhere) Michael Crichton played a great role in my being here today writing, and your being here today reading. Thank you Michael… and God Bless. While encouraging my readers to do the same, I am sending Reiki to your friends and family to help in what I know is a trying ordeal, as well as to you… wherever you are.
