It’s interesting to take note of the various attitudes that different Reiki practitioners assume and how those attitudes change from situation to situation. I’d like to take a closer look at this here.
Newcomers to Reiki are virtually always fascinated with the wonder of Reiki and this wide-eyed fascination is always such a great pleasure to ignite, encourage and feed. Questions from new Reiki Practitioners are always such a delight to field. Go back to when you first started to learn Reiki and remember what it was like. Awesome, no? A good habit would be to empty your cup (here for help) before participating in any Reiki activities and allow yourself to experience them anew… you’ll be able to learn a whole lot more and enjoy yourself a whole lot more in the process.
Another attitude I’ve frequently seen in Reiki paths is the extended spirituality attitude. In many cases spirituality is often far too neglected in people’s lives and when Reiki Practitioners are first exposed to some of the deeper spiritual aspects, and when those particular doors of perception are thrown open, its like a part of them that was missing has finally been found. This new reconnection creates a light that shines from within, and, as was true with the newcomers it is most delightful to witness. Of course, some people seem to take it too far, but in most cases that is just the result of the imbalance created when the newly discovered ideologies conflict with the more practical aspects of ones life… they all eventually balance themselves out as the dust clears… so to speak. ![]()
One Reiki attitude I’m not so enamored with is that of some of the self-proclaimed Reiki experts who think they have all the answers. Reiki is organic, and as such cannot be put in a box. It must be allowed to breathe and grow or it will suffocate. Some practitioners go too far in touting their Reiki supremacy and are doing themselves as well as their students a great disservice. Each person is on their own Reiki path and just because it is a different path than that of another Reiki Practitioner does not make it any less real. To those “experts” I would remind them that in order to truly be enlightened one must overcome the ego.. which they have yet to realize.
I certainly hope that in these pages I do not come across as one of those Reiki know-it-alls. I do my sincere best not to, and I’m the first to admit that I have a lot to learn and am just trying to piece this mystery together the same as everyone else. Being in Japan and meeting with some of Japan’s greatest Reiki masters on a regular basis gives me some advantages, but in the end the only answers that count are those that come from within… so being in Japan will only take me so far. This is just my personal Reiki blog, I’m not trying to sell anything to anyone or change anyone’s life, I’m just sharing what I know and what I learn in the hopes that others will do the same and those that care to can can work together to try to understand that which needs to be understood. If that makes any sense… ![]()
Just as distasteful as I find the air or superiority in some Reiki practitioners I also don’t really like the air of inferiority… those that think they are below Reiki or can’t do it or aren’t so skillful. I meet many of those in Japan where the culture is much different than in the West. As is true with Yoga, one should never endeavor to compare their Reiki to that of another person… it is only a true comparison if you compare it with yourself. In Yoga, everyone’s body is created different, some can touch their toes easily because their legs are shorter… that does not mean the yoga practitioner who can’t touch their toes is inferior in any way. So too with Reiki, there is no way to compare, its like apples and oranges, so never let another practitioner make you feel inferior your Reiki is exactly what it needs to be… no more, no less.
There are other attitudes like…
- those who are Reiki doubters or skeptics
- those who try to make Reiki easier than it really is
- those who try to make Reiki more difficult than it really is
- those that put too much emphasis on only one of the pillars of Reiki (while insinuating the others are not important)
- those that are too pushy in trying to get others to accept Reiki
- those that add an air of religion, mystery, Sorcery or Secrecy to Reiki
- etc.
These are neither good or bad, just some of the attitudes I’ve seen.
Personally I find all these different attitudes rather refreshing… after all, if we all felt the same way about everything things might be a bit boring. ![]()
