Yesterday we were discussing the importance of balance on the physical plane. If youโ€™ll recall the basic idea was that Reiki is all about balancing energy. Reiki, as intelligent energy, is drawn to energetic imbalances like a magnet is drawn to its polar opposite.Today we are going to shift that discussion to something a bit more abstract, yet if you followed yesterdays line of thinking then today shouldnโ€™t present too much of a stretch as we extend the concept to include mental health.

Mental Health

The concept of mental health has been bantered about for quite a while and since Iโ€™m not a professional mental health practitioner (nor do I play one on television) Iโ€™m hardly qualified to give a definitive explanation, but in the words of Phileas Fogg “when you have not you must make due with what youโ€™ve got” (at least I think it was good old Phileas) so Iโ€™ll give it a whirlโ€ฆ having not has never stopped me before. :-)

Per the extremely biased folks over at Wikipedia, “Mental health is a term used to describe either a level of cognitive or emotional well-being or an absence of a mental disorder.”  I think this interpretation comes pretty close to fitting the mold exactly for what Iโ€™m trying to convey here, so lets run with it. First, lets get rid of the emotional reference, as mental well-being and emotional well-being are quite different, and emotion well-being does not fall within the scope of mental health. This leaves us with mental health as a level of cognitive well-being or an absence of a mental disorder. I would argue that in both of these cases the problem is an energetic imbalance.

Cognitive well-being denotes a balance in the mental faculties. This includes all of the activities under the jurisdiction of the brain (as opposed to the heartโ€ฆ which weโ€™ll be discussing tomorrow). Thinking, judging, planning ,studying, reasoning, rationalizing, exercising logic and other sorts of brain teasers and activators are all included here. When all of these things (as well as the ones I neglected to mention) are running smoothly we have a state of cognitive or mental well-being.

In the above definition I find the word or is a bit troubling since I believe cognitive well-being is equivalent to the absence of a mental disorder. If there is any kind of disorder, this is the result of a mental energetic imbalance in much the same way as physical ailments are the result of physical energetic imbalances. In Reiki these are commonly referred to as mental blocks and they always lie at the heart of mental disorders.

Balancing Your Mental Health

Now, as was true in yesterdayโ€™s post on physical imbalances, whereby Reiki was said to intelligently provide the counter energy necessary to correct the imbalance, Reiki works exactly the same way with mental imbalances. If you could see energy, than something like yesterdayโ€™s example of a broken leg would appear like a black cloud of energy in the area of the injury. Mental “injuries” would appear the same, i.e., as black clouds somewhere around the brain. Again, if you could see energy, you would be able to witness Reiki energy as it attacks this black cloud, not in a violent sense, but more like pouring cold water into a pot of boiling water until the water was at room temperature (which represents balance).

With Reiki (as with other similar healing modalities) it has long been acknowledged that these energy imbalances are, nine times out of ten, in the form of energy blocks. That is, one (or more) of the natural rivers that carry energy to and from vital nerve centers in the brain are blocked. Kind of like a dam. As that energy builds up and backs up it begins to stagnate and harden and becomes more difficult to break through with each passing day. This is the main reason I encourage my students to always use distance Reiki to send Reiki back in time to when the block was first createdโ€ฆ because it is much easier to deal with new blocks than with old ones.

For extreme cases, and for general ease in not so extreme cases, Reiki also has the added bonus of a special symbol used in mental/emotional healing which acts like an amplifier for the balancing Reiki energy. This symbol is not necessary but can speed up the healing tremendously if used correctly.

Tune in tomorrow as we continue this discussion in relation to emotional health. Better yet, invite the friends that you invited yesterday to invite their friends so you can all enjoy it together! :-)
