On the surface there doesn’t seem to be much in common between Reiki & the 3000 year old Chinese art/science of Feng Shui, but on closer examination they actually share quite a bit of common ground. Today I’d like to take a look at this connection and see if it might be of value in one’s Reiki practice.
Feng Shui is primarily concerned with maintaining a balance of yin and yang (or in and yo in Japanese) energy in ones home. Feng means wind and Shui means water, Wind is yang and water is yin. All things possess either yin energy or yang energy. Men are yang while women are yin. The sun is yang while the moon is yin. Wisdom is yang while compassion is yin. Love is yang while tenderness is yin. None of these are 100% as this symbol shows:
Inside of yin there is some yang and inside of yang there is some yin, and, for example, as you can see in the image, the yang in the figure gradually tapers of as it goes until finally it changes into yin. Yin and yang are two opposing forces and when they are balanced correctly everything is fine… otherwise, there are problems.
Fung Shui heals people by healing their environments. We absorb the energies of the place where we live. If the energies are in balance outside of us, they will naturally be balanced inside of us. Reiki healing deals with breaking through energetic blocks in our bodies various energetic systems while Feng Shui deals with breaking through energetic blocks in our home’s various energetic systems, so they really do have a lot in common.
So how can a knowledge of Feng Shui help us in our Reiki practice? Well, for one thing I think some experience with Feng Shui gives us detailed knowledge of how one partciular energy system works, and that knowledge can help us to understand the energetic aspects of Reiki in greater depth. Since Feng Shui deals with houses, buildings, plots of land, even cities or countries, we can see how things work on a very large scale which makes it easy to understand when we apply it on a smaller scale in regard to Reiki energy. For example, in Feng Shui it is easy to see how energy builds up or stagnates in certain areas of the house due to blocked channels, old energy, insufficient fresh energy, confused or contradicting directions, etc. which is basically the same way that energy blocks can occur in the body. Seeing it on a macrocosmic scale helps us to understand it on a microcosmic scale where the principles remain the same.
I’m fairly new to the study of Feng Shui, so I’m far from being an expert, and while it seems to have much more in common with the ancient Japanese practice of Seiki than Reiki, I am certainly interested in learning more, as the more I learn about Feng Shui the more I feel they complement each other in an important way and I have no doubt that a Feng Shui Reiki, or Reiki Feng Shui would make a most interesting style of either discipline. ![]()
