I was always a bit curious as to why the study of anatomy was important in Reiki? It seems that Reiki’s “founding fathers” all emphasized an understanding of anatomy and physiology, and in fact Dr. Usui’s manual seems to be mostly dedicated to it. I was also always curious as to the “intelligent” nature of Reiki energy. So I attempt bring these two together here.
Reiki Anatomy
The first reason I believe that a study of anatomy is important for one’s Reiki practice is that a study of anatomy and functionality of the human body allows you to explain things to the people who you are helping in a much more easy to understand way (as well as a much more professional manner). While not necessary for healing, you will a much more credible healer if you actually know where the liver is and what it does.
When I studied for my Aromatherapy Certification I was surprised to find that the who first section dealt primarily with anatomy (where things are) and physiology (what things do) and a good part of the examination required a deep understanding of these. “What’s this got to do with Aromatherapy?”, I thought. Well, basically, if you wanna be a healer, you don’t only need to walk the walk, you also need to talk the talk.
Reiki as Intelligent Energy
An understanding of what connects to what and the functions of specific parts of the body lets you know where to concentrate the Reiki energies, yes Reiki is intelligent energy, but the best results have often come from knowing what you’re doing, rather than expecting Reiki to know what you’re doing.
What exactly do we mean when we say that Reiki is intelligent energy? Does that mean that it can pass the bar exam? I don’t think so. Generally we consider intelligence to be the capacity for understanding and there are different types of intelligence for different types of understanding. I believe the idea that Reiki is intelligent energy is a very primitive understanding of Reiki and that it may not be intelligent in the way we think it is.
Being that Reiki is Quantum in nature, I believe the basis of Reiki healing lies in Reiki resonance. Resonance is what happens when you pluck the G String on a guitar and the same string vibrates on another guitar across the room. Does that mean the second guitar is intelligent? I think not. In the case of Reiki, the Reiki energy in your hands is attracted energy of an opposite polarity, just like the positive end of a magnet is attracted to the negative end.
If you hone your Reiki sensitivities enough you can detect this attraction as it occurs and actually follow the attraction so that you are bringing the positive energy closer and closer to the negative energy. When these two energies are brought into contact with each other, a war of sorts occurs. The longer you keep the positive energy concentrated on the negatively charged (dis-eased) area, the weaker the negative energy will get until it finally disappears.
The Bottom Line
If you are interested in the healing aspects of Reiki (as opposed to the energetic or spiritual aspects) than a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology will help you out immensely. Just because you believe in the intelligent nature of Reiki energy doesn’t mean your clients do, and with the proper belief system in place, healing is just that much easier and just that much more effective. And that’s what were ultimately after, isn’t it?

I am in my ninth month of pregnancy and just had Reiki performed on me by a Reiki Master. After the session, she said she was drawn to my knees and my left shoulder. She also said that the energy was very slow, like molasses (which she has never felt before). And finally, she talked a little about my chakras…that my red was very large and my green and blue were small (closed?).
My issue, I guess, is that she didn’t explain what any of this meant. I believe in Reiki and its healing effects, but I also believe that a Reiki Master should be able to explain themselves more thoroughly.
Your thoughts?
Thanks!

Hi Rene!
Ninth month… how nice! Won’t be long now!! Be sure to check out my post on Reiki and Pregnancy when you get a sec…
Generally speaking, interpreting chakras isn’t part of Reiki, and it takes a pretty advanced energy worker to be able to do so with any degree of accuracy or legitimacy. If she couldn’t explain herself effectively, then in all likelihood she either didn’t really know what she was talking about, or she didn’t know that you were interested in more information.
In my experience chakra readings vary from person to person and also from day to day, so it is pretty tough to judge them as they should only be compared against themselves, and not other people. There are some general rules about what each one does, but it is hardly an exact science. I also noticed my wife’s aura and chakras changing considerably during pregnancy, so that is also something that needs to be taken into account.
You are absolutely right though that Reiki Masters should be able to thoroughly explain themselves… in this case it sounds like “her” blue chakra is a bit small! ๐
Best of luck with your delivery and I wouldn’t worry at all about the chakra reading… just let the Reiki energies do their thing (I’ll be sending you some from here as well). ๐
