Just because your Reiki teacher, a book on Reiki or even my own Website says something doesn’t make it true. Reiki is all about seeking enlightenment… are you willing to risk your spiritual destiny on taking something someone else says for granted? Here are some pointers to make sure you don’t…
- Be Careful of Ambiguous Language – When teachers use terms like “research suggests” or “new discovery” without giving details about the specific research or discovery this should send up a red flag. Be sure to separate fact from opinion and always seek to clarify things that aren’t immediately clear.
- Be Careful of Things that Aren’t Traditional Reiki – Its okay to learn (and teach) thing that Dr. Usui did not… just be sure to identify which is which. There are many wonderful things being brought into Reiki every day… but just because they are wonderful, doesn’t make them Reiki! Teachers unconsciously tend to bring their own beliefs into their teachings… whether Wiccan, Buddhist, Republican, Hypnotherapeutic, Shamanic, etc… these beliefs can muddy the waters, so to speak, of something that should be abundantly clear.
- Test Things Out For Yourself – When you learn something new don’t just take someone’s word for it… try it out… right then and there, make it a point to test it and see what results you personally get.
- Find New Reiki Teachers to Learn From – Make sure you find the best Reiki Master for you, one that can explain him or herself cleaerly and is able to answer your questions to your satisfaction. There are thousands of Reiki Masters out there ready, willing and able to lend a hand.
- Try a New Reiki Style Or Two – Find a style of Reiki that you deeply resonate with. There are hundreds of different styles out there, no two of which are created equally, find the one that will guide you straight through to the end.
- Ask Questions!!! – Ask tons of questions. Riddle your lessons with questions. Teachers that are teaching effectively should do the same. After teaching a particular concept (especially difficult concepts) you should ask questions to make sure the students have understood it. Teacher’s that just lecture and give the same teachings over and over without interacting with the unique class are offering little more than that which can be gotten from a book.
- Teach Reiki Yourself – It doesn’t matter if you are a certified Reiki teacher or not… anyone can tell (teach) their friends about Reiki and field the ensuing questions. To teach is to master! If they are looking for certification, send them to a qualified Reiki Teacher… but don’t let that stop you from teaching and learning the lessons that only teaching can give.
- Read!!! – Get the latest books on Reiki and see what they have to offer. Make sure you apply the above suggestions as you read them and don’t hesitate to contact the authors to ask them questions… authors that are not willing to answer your questions are not worth reading.
- Don’t Be Afraid to Challenge Your Teachers – You have the right to understand and to be understood. Of course you should always be respectful of your Reiki Teachers and other students. Challenges can be made in a way that benefits everyone involved… don’t be shy!

"do not seek to follow in the footsteps of the wise – seek what they sought"ย – basho
Who can disagree with Basho? Except I might change it to:
To keep it in the Haiku form for which Basho is renowned…
