Mt. Kurama, Kyoto, Japan

One of my fondest memories of Mt. Kurama is when I was trekking up the mountain with Hiroshi Doi and members of the Gendai Reiki Network here in Japan and practicing the Reiki technique of self-attunement.

What is a Reiki Self-Attunement?

A Reiki self-attunement is where you perform a Reiki attunement (a connection to the Reiki energies) on yourself. Reiki masters that are familiar with the Reiki attunement procedure simply modify whatever Reiki attunement procedure they are familiar with to direct the energies to themselves [inward] rather than to the Reiki practitioner [outward]. As with the normal attunement procedure, intent is key… how do you think Dr. Usui attuned himself in the first place?

Why is Reiki Self-Attunement Important?

Reiki Self-Attunements are not only important… but they are quite enjoyable. There are many unique energies floating around out there and Reiki may just be the gate which exposes the Reiki practitioner to some of these more accessible energies. As you develop your skill as a Reiki practitioner you will become more and more familiar with the subtle Reiki energies (with subtle energies in general, actually) and you will begin to notice and distinguish other energies which are quite fun to connect to.

With practice you will also be able to distinguish good vs. bad energies which is vitally important, because you don’t want to be attuning yourself to negative energies. So be careful… this is an extremely powerful technique that should be used with caution. Mt. Kurama has a very powerful yet subtle at the same time kind of energy… so attuning yourself to those energies whenever you have the occasion to visit, is a way of taking a bit of the mountain home with you!

Self attunement was never discussed or mentioned by my master/teacher and I find this fascinating and it is something I will definitely try out! I also practise tai chi and my teacher has always stated that our intent is the most important tool we have in any kind of energy work. Thank you for this.
