I received and email yesterday about one facet of Reiki that is seldom discussed and that concerns The Dark Side of Reiki… those negative aspects that many choose to ignore… for good reason.
A word of caution first… for those of you who do not believe in negative energies, negative spirits or indeed a darker side to Reiki… although I will not be going too deeply into this you may not want to be reading this as it may be quite unsettling for those falling in the “ignorance is bliss” camp. If you want to find out a little about it… read on…
The main thrust of the Dark Side of Reiki issue involves negative energies. Just as Reiki is a positive energy, those that adhere to this belief (and many who have experienced it directly… i.e., ventured beyond mere belief) and subscribe to the what goes up must come down, or for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction schools of physics infer that the white light of Reiki attracts a dark force that seeks to undo the good that Reiki does. That when you connect to Reiki your connection is visible to those that can see… and if those that can see are following the other path than you may have an enemy that you don’t even realize.
There is also the possibility that the Reiki Angels, Archangels, Ascended Masters and Reiki Spirits that assist in Reiki healing have enemies of their own and that by associating with these forces for good you are marking yourself as an enemy of darkness.
The bottoms line may very well be that if you accept that these forces exist you empower them and open yourself up to their influence. Should that be the case then you may wish to take the extra step of protecting yourself when involved in any Reiki (or any white light) practice. The good news is that there are ways to do this. As a scuba diver it is my experience that sharks don’t mess with you unless you mess with them first… or threaten them in some way… and I find that true of these negative forces as well. But for those needing some security there are a few options.
The easiest method of protection is to surround yourself with a White or Golden Cocoon of protection when you are involved in any type of energy work. When you do Reiki, ask your Reiki guides or spirits to protect you from these negative influences… because they may not be manifesting themselves into your life in obvious ways and may very well be sneaking in under the radar… so to speak. Surround yourself with a layer of protection… the Reiki energies are more than capable of providing their own protection should it be directed so.
If you are a religious person… pray for protection… just ask and it shall be given. Wear a crucifix and that will protect you to the extent that your dogma allows. There are other physical items, such as gemstones (such as the peacock ore pictured above), crystals, smudge sticks, essential oils, talismans, etc. that also offer varying degrees of protection. Google “protection from negative energy” and you’ll get a half a million pages worth of advice. Just remember… just because its on the Internet doesn’t make it true…. and that goes for my own stuff <technical term> as well). You will resonate with the truth when you find it.
There are many Reiki practitioners who are much more well versed in this aspect of energy healing than I am… feel free to seek them out and ask for their advice or suggestions… just remember… as I said… if you accept that these forces exist you empower them and open yourself up to their influence so be careful of what you accept and who you talk to.
In closing, I would like to point out that this post was extremely difficult to write and to find the right wording in that the contents are of a somewhat sensitive nature. I would like to ask my own Reiki guides to protect this post and all who read it from those interpreting it in any way, shape or form as an invitation to any type of negative influence or psychic attack. My intention is not to challenge anyone or their beliefs … nor to color outside of the lines in any way… I just hope to offer a glimpse into practices that may or may not actually exist and empower my readers with the knowledge that there may (or may not) actually be a Dark Side of Reiki.

I would not necessarily call those negative energies ‘dark side of Reiki’, since they are not really essential part of Reiki. They may or may not tag along, but they are (imo) not Reiki itself…
Living in ignorance is great, knowledge can be a burden at times…but I would still rather be warned.
My Reiki Master suggested whenever I feel negative presence to turn on the ‘switch’ located in Solar Plexus and cover myself (and whoever or whatever I would like to protect) in a blue (protective) light…
She also sugggested I could say these words if I am not sure if presence is good or not;
“If you are not here for my good be gone, if you are here for my good make your presence known.”
Interesting observation the only negative forces I’m aware of are negative Spirit Beings – Spirits, Ghosts and Angels etc. who are seeking power and influence; when most of these Spirit Beings are looking for help, healing and release.
Observation and experience has shown that the more aware you become of your Spiritual Being and Energy; you become more sensitive to subtle changes in Energy including Negative energy created from collective negative Human Consciousness caused by events like Earth Quakes or wars etc.
If you are in this group it it good to find the methods or actions that work for you; from you healer; or try those suggested above to protect yourself. Negative Spirit Beings can be healed and permanently removed.

I like your suggestion curlyone… one popular Reiki Master teaches that when you connect to Reiki you invite the spirits (of Dr. Usui, Dr. Hayashi, Mrs. Takata, etc.), archangels, asceneded masters, etc. for both assistance, guidance and protection. She also teaches that only those you invite will have access to you anyway…
You are also quite right Ian about the subtle Reiki energies… the more time you spend with them the more sensitive you are to them and the more you get used to them… so any negative energies or influences will be immediately detected.

With any healing practice there is the chance that someone/something of a ‘darker’ nature may show up. I do believe what Duane has said about their being drawn to us by our light – the greater the light, the greater the chance of drawing in these beings. I also do believe that we, as lightworkers, are protected. Whenever I do a healing session I first clear and consecrate the space inviting in my and my client’s guides, angels and any ascended masters who wish to be there. When I first started doing sessions, I would notice darker forms lurking around the periphery of the space along with the above mentioned guides, etc. When this would occur I would ask them who they were – they would generally try to hide. I would then ask that only beings of Light be allowed to stay, and they would leave.
I also use the Reiki symbols to protect myself when I am going into situations where I know that I will or will have a great chance chance of being surrounded/immersed in negative energies – I have found that this works quite well. It does not stop them, but it certaily shields me from them. I do believe that it is when we invite them in (and this can be done with negative attitudes, unjust anger, etc. that opens a window for them)that they have the ability to effect us.

there are things i could say, but like duane, i’m not sure how best to word them.
i would like to say, though, that whenever i move into a new dwelling, i use reiki to clear it out and then, like my teacher told me, i draw the reiki symbols on the doors and windows and corners of each room to seal them. my teacher had used the method in the past to keep particular rooms clear in “haunted” houses.
i once used reiki symbols in a dream to make a being leave my space, as he was screaming at my door to let him into my house…
my reiki teacher told me once, “now that you are a reiki, (some things – honestly don’t remember the word or words he used) will fear you.”
i suspect that his master had more experience in these matters, but sadly he is no longer with us
this post really strikes home for me, duane, and makes a few of my experiences make a bit more sense.
i’d also like to add that a few years back, not long after my first attunement, my master and i had reconnected with someone we each had gone to school with. my teacher said to me one day that where he was on the “good” side of the spectrum, our friend (who agreed with this whole-heartedly) was on the opposite side (i was in the middle, myself, according to them)
as an experiment, my master gave reiki to our friend, who claimed that it actually made him hurt. he could heal himself (and others if he wanted) on his own, but could also push an illness off of himself and onto someone else.
i actually recieved my third attunement in his garage. his house was “haunted” as well, and there was a mysterious noise coming from the field across the street every night. it would sometimes follow my teacher back to his own home, but it was understood among us that whatever it was, it was really concerning itself with another of our friends who lived next door. nothing for anyone to really get spooked about, anyway. was just one of the things that made that place and our time there more interesting

if you find yourself encountering something of this nature, use reiki to shield yourself and don’t invite anything in
stay calm, do not fear, and trust reiki to work for the highest good.

have you ever gotten a burn or a cut that itched or felt otherwise uncomfortable as it healed? i think that it’s a similar experience that my friend felt…just on another level. this definition of healing may explain why he felt such discomfort, as he was one who did not really accept this unity or harmony (but again, i can’t really speak for him either)
Although I was told otherwise by a friend, I believe my own energy is in fact Negative. But in the point that I search for any source of energy to fuel my own energy.
I just wonder if such a thing is possible. I have thought about this for years, before even knowing about reiki and upon reading this it seems more possible that I very well might indeed have a negative energy.
So yeah… I doubt I might get a responce, but if possible I would like to understand more about this and what I believe to be my “Negative space” energy.

You have created and interesting discussion here let me address a couple of points. Firstly I have no training in Reiki however Energy Healing uses the same Source and all Healers can be affected by the same Spiritual or Energy Beings.
As you become more evolved as a Soul you will attract more Spiritual Beings that have chosen to remain around Earth, most are seeking help to be released or Healed and returned to their Spiritual Home. They can identify the level of evolvement by your colour. The best way to deal with these beings is to Heal and release them.
For Carl your situation is that at 4 years old you leaned or more importantly your Spiritual Side learned how to send Negative Energy to others. This was done as a protective or survival reaction, however once learned your Spiritual Side will run this Automatic Program every time you are confronted with these same emotions. This Program in your case is not a conscious action but is being run unconsciously, yet it has a very disturbing effect on the recipient. I refer to this as a Psychic Attack.
Carl, I have asked permission of your Soul and have now removed this unconscious program for you. This should help you greatly as those that run these Psychic Attack Programs are often subject to similar attacks from other Souls who have learned this misguided action. I had been initiated into Reiki around 12 years ago and have recently gone through the 21 day healing process ( was reinitiated through a common acquintance). Its been almost just over 40 days since that time. Around 5 days ago, i was again with this acquintance whne i initiated reiki healing, when i could not see anything but darkness. since that day, i have been feeling weak (spritually) and am not able to feel the same intesnsity of the warmth that i used to feel earlier. I felt very contented when i finished the 21 day course, but now i feel so drained and lost and disturbed.
Why do i fell the way i feel and why dont i see colours now……..

It could be a condition that has nothing to do with Reiki… I’d see an eye doctor as I don’t believe it is related to the initiation…
